The navy and copper uniforms

I really wanted to see the Leafs go to Winnipeg and see some really nice retro hockey jerseys. Maybe next year? Edmonton selected Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first overall and used the opportunity to reveal the retro jersey which now matches the club's blue and orange home uniform — completing a set fans have been begging for. If the Stars fared the worst in the switch to Reebok Edge jerseys in 2007, the Oilers weren't far behind. The navy and copper NHL jerseys were a disappointment. As with many new Reebok uniforms, there were no waist stripes. And the sleeve stripes inexplicably stopped on top of the elbow instead of wrapping completely around the arm. Only a season later, the complaints of fans were quelled by the introduction of a retro third jersey that brought back the brightly-colored blue and orange from the 1980s — most associated with Gretzky's Cup-winning dynasty. In 2009-10, the fan-favorite uniform got top-billing as the new home sweater. Many fans were hoping the white jersey return last season, but after three straight years of uniform changes in Edmonton, the NHL probably frowned upon a fourth — even though the Isles got away with it. This means the 2007 white jersey is officially retired and that's great news for everyone but Flames fans (who can't make fun of them for bad MLB jerseys anymore). The real bad news, however, the third jersey will not be changing. So those wannabe stripes aren't disappearing entirely quite yet. The Panthers joined a handful of teams at the 2011 draft in unveiling a brand new jersey at the podium. As had been rumored for some time, Florida is going back to red for their home uniform (right) in 2011-12. And even a Lightning fan will admit that's a good thing. The Stinkin' Panthers were never supposed to be blue. That's Lightning territory. Happy to see them reclaim their original identity. The Panthers' first red Baseball Jerseys was relegated to alternate status in 2003. When the Reebok switchover occurred in 2007, the red went away entirely. The new red sweater borrows from the same template as the old blue one, without the extraneous piping on the front and sleeves. The red rumors go back to January when Miami Herald writer George Richards revealed what he'd heard from players and team officials. On July 8, Richards also reported that the Panthers will be debuting a new road sweater as well. He says the new jersey will look an awful lot like the current one — white with red on the sleeves — except that now the useless blue piping is going away. Additionally, it sounds like the Panthers are keeping their navy and powder blue third jersey. I've always been a fan of it. Though it's been reported (also by Richards) that team management could do without it. So the Panthers may again grace this space in 2012. We'll keep an eye on it. in regards to the Pens substituting white for the throwback 'white', a lot of the knockoff jerseys use that white color and it certainly stands out. one can see that the Jerseys is meant to be a throwback or a nod or older teams, and a bright white seems out of place.

The Anaheim Ducks' wordmark

As for the logo itself, I love it.. Right on the money about trying to put the term "Ice Caps" into a design, I was worried it would be too much so the word mark is a safe bet with at least some design thrown in. It might even help the name grow on me, maybe. Maybe not. The worst kept secret in the American Hockey League became official this morning. True North's Manitoba Moose have officially become the Toronto Blue Jays Jerseys. As you'd expect, the IceCaps' colors line up with their NHL parent club, the Winnipeg Jets. Two shades of blue and two shades of gray/silver. Only the IceCaps wisely left out the red maple leaf. What I find neat about this logo and the Jets logo is that at the top of each logo there is some sort of point pointing upwards. I see that as a compass of sort pointing north, thus representing the True North brand in the logo as well. The primary logo makes heavy use of the wordmark, but that's not surprising considering the name. And it's not a bad name, it just doesn't lend itself well to imagery the way that, say, "Chicago Cubs Jerseys" does. Perhaps the best thing about this mark is its easter egg. At a glance, it's merely snow cover atop a rugged mountain. But when you really look, there's a sort of stylized "N" and "L" carved out for Newfoundland and Labrador — which also happen to be shaped like the actual map boundaries. That's a very cool feature. If you're like me, you're satisfied — even pleasantly surprised — by this logo but just hoping they drop the "St. John's" bit at the top when it comes time to slap it on a sweater. Regulars may be a bit surprised to find that I like a logo that's basically a wordmark, but there are always gray areas. I don't care for the Anaheim Ducks' wordmark because, well, a duck is an easy thing to put into a textless image. IceCaps can be more challenging. You don't want to lose your brand identity trying to create a logo that's too clever for its own good. Especially in the minors. And you can argue all you want with the name choice, but I can't say I mind it. Yes, it breaks some critical rules by including the word "ice" and running it all together with a capital letter in the middle, but it's just one of those throwback things. “Caps” not only perfectly complements the name in the literal translation of an icecap, it is also pays tribute to the St. John’s Caps, a Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association team which played in the former provincial senior hockey league. Along with this logo, the IceCaps unveiled a new wordmark, which includes the same elements as the primary — just repositioned. You can see it on the poster used at this morning's unveiling event (above) thanks to Mark Denine, who tweeted this photo for us. There were no secondary marks revealed today, but I'm sure at least one shoulder of the uniforms will get the new Winnipeg Jets logo. Speaking of Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys, they were not unveiled today either and will probably come out closer to the start of the season. I'd bet they use the same design as the Pittsburgh Pirates Jerseys, and we're not expecting to see those until early September. Maybe we see both at the same time. Logo has some nice elements to it. I think the blue kills any affiliation to the Caps history, I beleive they were always red and white. The logo is clever the team name is lame but it is minor league hockey where players will spend 3 weeks to 2 years with the orgnaization. I suspect this will be a 3 year venture as travel to St.John's is only going to get more expensive but I am looking forward to using the folks season tickets when I can! I'll grant you this logo is no replacement for the Manitoba Moose, but it's certainly not as weak in terms of design as the Jets' new primary. Now it's your turn. Hit or miss by True North? I can't see how you despised the MLB Women Jerseys new logo and like this one. Looks very amateur to me. Those white snow peaks look like they were done in Mario Paint. I get that they were trying to give the word mark some perspective but the word is so short and the perspective so not pronounced that it makes the two "C"'s look unbalanced and the whole thing look wrong.

The dark blue winter classic jersey

Columbus, Florida, St. Louis, even Pittsburgh currently have a Jersey like that. Winnipeg should have "stepped outside" and try something new like what Nashville did. Trenton, NJ is where New York fans meet Philadelphia fans. I grew up in the area, and it was very common to be a Philly fan in one sport and a NY fan in the other. Sports fans in Mercer County have their pick of the litter when it comes to sports teams to root for. By changing the Titans to the Devils, the team isolated a lot of Flyer and Ranger fans in the area. That is why the Trenton Devils did so poorly at the gate. The last thing Flyer and Ranger fans want to do is chant "Let's Go Devils". This is a good move by changing the team name to the Titans. With the question of the logos fully answered, what now remains is this: What will the new Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys look like? To follow up what Anthony said, the Jets are Just following the trend of a "blue jersey-circle logo" combo. Not that it looks bad, but it is overused. Details have been eking out at a slow pace, but a pace set by the franchise itself, for a change. Icethetics reader Jacob McInnis tweeted what he heard True North chairman Mark Chipman talking about on FAN 590 on Tuesday. For one thing, Chipman said the only red on the uniforms will be in the maple leaf on the logos. Now that extra shade of blue in the alternate wordmark makes sense. He also said the secondary mark, the wings, will be the shoulder patches. As far as when the new sweaters will be unveiled, I still haven't seen anything official, but the expectation is still early September. One thing worth noting however, are the new Jets T-shirts which you can find in both light blue and dark blue — keeping us guessing about which color the home Milwaukee Brewers Jerseys will be. This photo was tweeted by the team earlier today. Frankly, the logo looks better on dark blue, but I would love the irony of the Jets using the same color jerseys as the Thrashers did. Though I'm sure Atlanta fans wouldn't find it nearly as funny. Jacob also said Chipman talked about a desire to honor old Jets jersey numbers, similar to what the Toronto Maple Leafs do. This makes more sense that all out retiring numbers for players who never actually suited up for this particular franchise. Got any other Jets nuggets I've missed? I'd love some links if these details are in print somewhere. And there's a reason that this final link is at the end of this post. Lots of folks went nuts-o when they thought this alleged "NHL 12 leak" was the Jets new uniform. I'm not saying it again. But obviously, it isn't. It's a Capitals jersey. That is all. I have to admit...I know the EA sports jersey isn't a leak and its obviously a Caps jersey like you said...but it actually looks pretty damn good on a MLB Women Jerseys, cant wait to start seeing the concepts pour in. I mean I really do think that they hit this one right on the head and it will quickly become an iconic logo. After all it falls into all the right categories: no need for wordmarks to tell you who the team is, logo is simple and clean to the point, has a symbolic meaning while still standing on its own as the logo for the team. Not to mention, it looks pretty sharp with the light blues. Makes the dark blue ring pop and keeps a great color in the nhl now that Atlanta is gone and the pens are dumping theirs for the dark blue winter classic Baseball Jerseys. By the way, I do hope my contempt for these EA video game "leaks" is coming through. I wouldn't want to downplay it at all. Just saying. I work at a sports merchandise retailer in Winnipeg, and we have been (obviously) swamped with Jets merch since the unveiling on Friday. I can tell you that everything we're being told is that the jersey will be for sale Oct 1st. We're already taking pre-orders. We haven't been given any details as to what colours to expect, but if you simply look at the brand guide on the Jets webpage, you'll notice that it displays all four logos on White, and then on Navy Blue, so it's probably safe to say we can expect a navy home MLB Jerseys. In addition, the light blue shirts, are selling about twice as much as the navy is. Also, Brad, I realize that pic isn't great quality, but the jet on all the shirts is silver one half, grey the other.

uniforms for the next few years

Cool that the Jets' new colours are those of the Canadian Air Force emblem, which is light blue jerseys, with the dark blue circle. The ECHL welcomed the trenton titans back into the league today, filling the gap left in New Jersey's capital city with the demise of the Trenton Devils. The team has already launched its new website — which at this point, merely links you to its Facebook and Twitter pages. Today's announcement also confirmed the Titans will be affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers. And the club's new logo will be the same as the one introduced when they first hit the ice 12 years ago. ECHL commissioner Brian McKenna at Trenton Titans press conference / Martin Griff, The Times The franchise played under the Titans name from 1999 until 2007 — a tenure which included a 2005 Kelly Cup championship — at which point the New Boston Red Sox Jerseys bought the franchise and rebranded it, just as they'd done the year before with the AHL team in Lowell, Mass. All the Devils' affiliates were called the Devils and basically had the same logo and Vancouver Canucks Jerseys for the next few years. Last summer, when the Albany River Rats became the Charlotte Checkers, the Lowell Devils headed to Albany. They then became the Albany Devils. On July 6, the New Jersey Devils gave up on their ECHL player development plan and shut down the Trenton franchise. It was then bought up by new owners who rebranded it with that familiar Titans moniker. So Trenton hockey fans aren't missing a beat here. So like the resurrection of the Winnipeg Jets, what's old is new again in Baseball Jerseys this year. And full credit to Chris Creamer over at SportsL for predicting the return of the Titans more than a month ago! Included in a blog post was the revelation that the ECHL has re-registered the Titans trademark on June 21. He assumed either the ECHL was getting into the retro gear business, or the Titans were staging a comeback. Call it what you like. I didn't say "EA screwed up the Wild shoulder patch." What I said we wouldn't know for sure how accurate the alteration was until October when the season started. In fact, here's a link to that post. By the way, in that same post you'll also see how they got the hockey jerseys wrong. I'm not saying EA is always wrong. The world isn't black and white. It doesn't have to be one way or another. I'm saying EA is too unreliable and inconsistent this early on to warrant blog posts every time somebody seems something that looks a little different. What's great about the Sabres and Amerks affiliation resuming is that the Sabres bought the Amerks outright this summer. The new Sabres ownership was well aware of the value of their affiliation in years past and it's sure work well again. I know we all gripe about NHL teams owning AHL teams and rebranding them in their own image, but with a Amerks' established history and image I don't think we need to worry about an Amerks' rebrand. I would love for the Sabres to affiliate with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL and monopolize Western New York. I'm very happy about the Titan's rebirth. The NHL Devil's tried to expand their brand and fanbase by branding all their affiliates the same as the parent club. So they bought the Lock Monsters and rebranded them the Devils even though it was Boston's backyard (dumb move). Then they bought Titans and rebranded them Devils even though it was in Philly's back yard (dumb move also). It's no wonder those experiments failed with fans since they are in other NHL teams's markets.

what kind of jersey design they use

The primary is a fantastic concept that is not as well executed as it could be, IMHO. That being said I'm willing to withhold judgement until the uniforms are revealed. The tie-in to the RCAF is a great way to rebrand the Jets. True North has long been supporters of the Canadian Forces. The Moose wore several military-themed Philadelphia Flyers over the years, including one that was an homage to the RCAF Flyers hockey team. I like the rebranding. I think with time it will be a unique symbol of jets hockey, and i think for a professional hockey team it's good to have a strong connection to the city. If they keep the primary logo smaller on the jersey than most other teams i think it will look great. Much like the RCAF appreciation NHL Jerseys used by the Moose. When rumours were spreading that the roundel was going to play a big role in the logo, I kept thinking back to a concept I saw pop up online quite awhile ago. Didn't think much of it at first but after I started to think about why each part of the primary logo was there, it grew on me. At first I thought it was a bit busy and you couldn't make out the jet in the primary logo. The pointy white thing pointing north is incorporating part of the true north entertainment logo then I started to see it as a compass. Its a circle with and when you combine the leaf and the jet it makes north south east west. It's simple and I think it works. They worked in the owners company, a jet, canada, the military and their old colors with modern colors so all in all it works for me. Give it a couple years and they will have the throwback jerseys as third jerseys. I like the part that will go on the shoulder patch. The word marking is the thing that doesn't fit form me. I'll be curious to see what kind of jersey design they use. "The Jets were named for the city's Western Hockey League team of the same name, honoring the city's growing transportation industry." That was what the original Jets were known for. This new era of Jets is obviously different owner, different times, etc. New logo had to be used, and what better than to honor the RCAF. The fans wanted "Jets", and they got "Jets" (people never said they wanted the original meaning!!!) Also a rip off, bland, w/e people want to say about it-they're entitled to their opinion. I think it's great, and like it was stated above, It's better than a logo in a circle with words, or the team name/city name across the jersey in front. Logos can be basic if they drive home the point. Also isn't this hockey where logos like this are on the Toronto Blue Jays Jerseys? It's not baseball where the name is etched across the jersey. As a ranger fan I know my team is a few of the exception, but this is a nice touch. That one is sheer brilliance, I think. The jet in the concept is the Avro Arrow, a prototype built in late 1950s that was set to serve the needs of the Air Force for decades to come. Controversially it was scrapped, and none of the prototypes survived. Having the CF18 is OK as that is the main jet currently flown. However, the CF18s will be replaced in the coming years by the CF35. After checking out the logo in action on the Jets website, I have to say... it's growing on me very quickly. If you watch the video "Fehr on the Logo," at the 6-second mark you see the logo on a hat, and it looks sharp! I also think that, now that it seems they're going to be using the logo atop a lighter blue (not the navy blue from the logo) - as evidenced by the shirts and some of the Reebock promo package showing old military Jerseys - that it's going to look even nicer than I thought on MLB Jerseys and merchandise. Just look at the shirt color the players are wearing in the posted videos on the Jets site... that color really makes the logo pop nicely.

Beer bottle-cap logo

To everyone that says Americans don't get it, and this is going over well in Winnipeg/Canada, that's simply not true. Everyone I know is making fun of it and calling it a Vancouver Canucks Jerseys logo. 'Labatt Blue Jets' and 'Molson Maple Leafs' are my faves. Who cares if it shows 'national pride'? It's not a national team. We need to stop being so self-conscious and throwing Canadian symbols on everything. Save it for the national teams. Imagine if every American team felt the need to throw stars and stripes on everything. Does Manitoba/Winnipeg not have any local heritage to celebrate? Having a night to sleep on it now, this is REALLY growing on me. The two minor changes I would make to this logo would be 1.) Lose the fire at the back of the plane because its already so easy to lose sight of the jet in the red maple leaf anyways. 2.) I would outline the dark grey side of the jet with the silver colour to even further help the jet stick out. I think if they can make the jet pop out more it could really help. The secondary Chicago Blackhawks Jerseys logo is fine but I would use a better font. All in all, not too blad. It is what it is... the team wanted a connection to the military in some way to play off the name "Jets," and they have it. And it does seem influenced by the Moose's throwback featuring the RCAF roundel. So what's wrong with that? You have to consider what they wanted, how much time they had, and then give it time to get used to it. I actually like it. Takes the RCAF roundel and incorporates it with an actual jet while also making it look somewhat like a compass facing north and keeping it simple at the same time. However, I really do not like the alternate wordmark. The shade of blue does not fit with the other colors at all, and the font doesn't seem fitting either. It looks too much like the Columbus Clippers baseball team. The primary wordmark is better, but I still don't like the font and it looks a lot like the Molson Canadian logo. But what really matters is that the primary logo looks great in my opinion, and it is much, much better than any Thrashers' logo.   I always laugh at knee-jerk comments made to new logos... there doesn't seem to be much logic to them other than the fact old or "classic" logos are usually given a wide berth and lots of respect. Can you imagine if the Canadiens logo was unveiled TODAY for the first time, instead of years ago? I can hear it now... "What, an H in a C? My two-year old could do better!" To those who mention the notch on the top for "True North" when I first saw the logo, that's not what I was thinking. I saw it, and saw how the top of the "Jet" could have bled into the bottom edge of the blue circle on top. The notch cleared a space for it, and doesn't look out of place. As far as the "fire" on the tail of the "Jet", look a little more closely. It's actually the stem of the maple leaf in the logo. You'd see this better in the secondary mark.   As far as MLB Jerseys go, I can't wait to see these, especially if the one poster was correct and they went with Montréal Canadiens style chest stripes. If that's the case, this is Grade A epic win, and will replace the Sharks as having the best jerseys in the entire league, by a clear margin. I'm not in love with the logos of the Jets but I don't dislike them either. They're fairly clean and simple and the wordmarks remind me of the original Jets logo to a point (the one year logo from 1972). If they don't catch on, then they'll redo them. But I think they'll be fine.   I just hope they incorperate at least a little red in the NHL Jerseys design... If you go on the official site, there is no red, just: Navy blue, silver, and that light sky blue. If you also look at the wiki page, there is no mention of red, just: Navy Blue, silver, and white... I have a bad feeling that they will not be using any red on the Jersey.  Gotta admit, I love all the Canadian posters saying that if you're not Canadian or not from Winnipeg, you wouldn't understand why they like the logo.... you know, completely ignoring the fact that there are plenty of Canadians on this site and elsewhere that don't like it, and a poll on the logo on the TSN website having it at 60% for, 40% against.
